SUDDEN DEATH devlog 001: not naming it after the hot sauce

July 25, 2026 · 2 min read

the pitch, more or less word for word from how i first described it: every month i want to host a social event. simple. the example i used was a mass rock paper scissors tournament. the actual first idea, though, is a da bomb contest — the hot ones hot sauce — where everyone puts in $5 and whoever lasts the longest holding out takes the whole pool.

i told the AI not to touch any code until it was 95% sure it knew what i wanted, and to keep asking questions until it got there. i'd rather spend twenty minutes answering questions than get halfway into the wrong thing.

first correction i had to make on myself: don't name the site after the hot sauce. "da bomb" is just what the first event happens to be built around, not what the series is. if i name the whole thing after one contest, i've boxed myself into doing hot sauce challenges forever, and next month it might be rock paper scissors or something nobody's thought of yet.

what actually matters here

i want a real admin flow so i'm not editing code every time something needs to change. also a demo toggle, so i can show someone the site without it looking empty before the first event happens.

not every event needs a prize on the line, or something to be scared of — some months it's just going to be a dumb game people show up for, nothing more. there should be a way for people to submit their own ideas for future events too, since i'm not going to be the only person who thinks of something worth doing.

and there needs to be a liability waiver or risk notice somewhere on the site. genuinely no idea yet if partiful is the right tool for handling rsvps and payment, or if i should just build that part myself. leaning toward building it, mostly because i don't want to depend on some other app's rules for something this small.

where it's at

nowhere, really. this is day one and it's all conversation so far. next step is actually seeing a page.
